It is very important to take into consideration the winds in Greece. As the country is divided into two island regions, the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea, it is very usefull to mark the following standards about the winds.
“Meltemia” is the name for the winds of the Aegean Sea, that are present from May until September and need to be studied before your departure from our base in Lavrion and during your whole sailing trip. Sometimes during July and August they become very strong and this particular phenomenon lasts average from two to four days.
The direction of the “Meltemia” depends on the region of the Aegean Sea islands. They have the following directions: from NE in the North Aegean, from N in Central Aegean and from the NW in the South Aegean. All sailing lovers appreciate these winds.
In some regions they can get really intense and are ideal for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Paros, Naxos, Myconos and Tinos are well known islands among their community. Actually the whole Cyclades area is very famous for the best sailing holidays in the whole world.
As for the Ionian islands, the winds come from NW during the summer time, you can enjoy a more relaxed sailing holiday with the help of “Maistros” which is the name of the wind.
